Chances are Oliver Knill, of Harvard University, did. He has a page on his website dedicated to clips in movies where characters show off their math skills, math is taught, or math is just plain there.
Take a look through his page and check out the movies there. Comment on this post with your favorite movie and if you can think of where there might be some math. It can be any math, easy or hard!
I never thought about math in movies, especially the Hangover. I was surprised at some of the titles in which math was present such as Disney's Alice in Wonderland and GI Joe. Great website.
Pay it forward is one of my all time favorite movies. I love the idea of helping someone and then seeing how that one act can help others. I never really thought of it as a math lesson, but the idea of exponents could def be talked about through calculating how many people one act could reach.
I love the math in the movie 21. It is so thought provoking when he is explaining why you should switch doors. Great way to grab students' attention and to make them really think about math!
The hangover is the best. For tv shows, I think the Big Bang Theory must use some, all though I haven't seen it in forever (chalkboard at the back of the room?).

ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to get students thinking about math. Is there a website for TV shows as well?
