Some Interesting Footwear

For those of you who are thinking of becoming a fashion designer and don't think math will be relevant to your future career choice - Think again! Designer Andreia Chaves uses several geometric designs to create fashion footwear. Each of the designs on her website have to be carefully designed so as to allow the wearer to be able to realistically walk in them.

Let's say you're going to play the lottery. You know, when you turn 18. Are you sure you want to spend that dollar? Of course, if you win, it was well worth it. But sure can you be that you'll win?

This nifty tool will tell you, based on your input of the amount of numbers and the lowest and highest possible number values, your chances of all your numbers being picked.

Just One More Game, Mom!

So the sudoku craze has died down significantly since coming over to the U.S. from Japan. One derivation of sudoku that is gaining popularity is called KenKen, or kendoku. The layout is similar to sudoku in that there is a grid of numbers to be filled in, but other than that the rules are very different.

So I was looking around the web for a cool math video, and I came across this one:


There are several other videos containing "math tricks." Can you figure out what's going on in this video? How does Shortdude1619 arrive at his answer?

Chances are Oliver Knill, of Harvard University, did. He has a page on his website dedicated to clips in movies where characters show off their math skills, math is taught, or math is just plain there.
